About The Expo

Tunisia, lost in Transition

Tunisia's 2011 Jasmin Revolution led to a long and volatile process of transition characterized by profound social and political upheavals and controversial debates about heritage, religion and identity. Today, hope has given way to despair as Tunisians find themselves stuck in a deep political and economic crisis.

This virtual art exhibition shows the widespread disillusion and the lack of orientation shaping contemporary Tunisia and illustrates how people are still struggling in finding their place in society, caught between tradition and modernity. Each artwork provides a window to a very individual mindset and perception of social constraints, political failure and economic misery, often coupled with the desire to escape reality.

The exhibition space links two rooms: one with a focus on political injustices and one dealing particularly with social grievances.

I want to Live
Video Artwork
2019

About the Artwork
This video presents various aspects of the day-to-day life of young people in Tunisia.

About the Artist
Ahmed is a Tunisian Artist who decided to try things his way and told his parents "consider that I travelled". He couldn't explain what his plan was because he didn't have a plan yet. He had only 60 dinars (20$) in his pocket when he went with a bag pack to start a new chapter. He wanted to focus on the street sensations themes where he tried different businesses on the streets of Tunis. He sold "machmoum" and was trying to stand out by adding stickers on the flowers, he sold rugs and socks on the popular streets of Tunis, then sold clothes and finally bought a cart to sell prickly pears.
His interaction with people, the struggles he went through and the whole experience was priceless in his opinion.
Currently he is working with multiple craftsmen to create Artistic objects that are inspired by the medina and by his adventures. He is also selling handmade notebooks to finance this project.

Firas Ben Jemaa
Actra (now you see)
Song
2022

About the Artwork
Lyrics of the song
What could've become If I were able to chose
is there another path in life where I can get my part
Instead of the one that I've chosen,
that I'm not convinced that it's the right one
just because I don't know the alternative choice.

I'm not strongly feeling it, just because
I haven't yet seen the Airport
but as I go on and everything becomes bad,
I'll automatically remember how I could never
remember what happened to my ancestors.

When we were young we all had the same dreams,
Big house, lots of cars, lots of money and that we'd travel
and see the world.
Time passed, and we're still waiting for that moment to come
Nothing changed, we're still living exactly as we were years ago
Still afraid of the same things.

Ever since I was a kid, people had my life fixed;
you'll grow up, either you'll be a Pilot or a Doctor
you have no other choices to be successful
I wasn't able to think of other possibilities,
my alter-ego is still fuming inside of me
If I were able I would get rid of all of those ones
who limited me, I just don't want to be another copy
because when I got my Bachelor degree,
people was not happy because I made it,
they were only thinking about how they'll have the chance
to choose my future for me.

That's why, I've made it clear that I would not follow anyone
or anything, I'll only do what my mind tells me.
because ever since the beginning, they'd always tell us
that the change is a shame.
you need to live by the standards,
dreams won't come true and as a result don't let your imagination
fool you, cause at that point you'll be a pathetic psychopath.

It's sad when you can't call your country «home»
cause we live in a dark world where people pass they lives fighting
cause If you don't, you'll lose your part.
cause we live in a classified word, rich-poor
people who stay up all night working, and people who don't bother
people who fight to get to their goals, and those who were born rich.

We are all followers, you just need to chose the color
and the design of your collar.
That's what'll make you differ

Genderless
Digital Collage
2021

About the Artwork
This Art piece is a way to provoke and to stand against gender roles, gender duality and heteronormativity.
Gender neutrality which is also known as gender-neutralism, is the idea that policies, language, and other social institutions (social structures or gender roles) should avoid distinguishing roles according to people's sex or gender.
In fact, this Art piece was created to raise awareness on how we should avoid discrimination that’s arising from the impression that there are social roles for each gender which people are suffering from in Tunisia. Also, the disparity in gender equality throughout history has had a significant impact on many aspects of society, including marketing, toys, education and parenting techniques.

About the Artwork
"War Baby" is an Art piece that depicts both physical and mental impacts of the past two years on human beings as everyone became so lonely, so helpless and unable to communicate with each other.
Most people lost their jobs, their homes and even their loved ones due to the last circumstances that we went through. It's like that we returned being babies again:
Small creatures who still don't know anything about life and yet they are always prepared for any changes and inconsistencies. By collecting their memories and their belongings in a small suitcase and by being armed with hope and ambition, they are ready to leave everything behind and start over which is something that most of the Tunisian society is experiencing nowadays.

She has been working as a digital artist/Illustrator for the past three years, drawing simple ideas in a surreal way, just finding the means to articulate her imagination. She had her work exhibited in the "Whale Festival" in the summer of 2021.

Firas Ben Jemaa
Actra (now you see)
Song
2022

About the Artwork
Lyrics of the song:

Ever since I was a kid, people had my life fixed;
you'll grow up, either you'll be a Pilot or a Doctor
you have no other choices to be successful

The film deals with the complexity and perniciosity of a whole system of exploitation of the sea whose victims are not only humans but also the ecosystem. The purpose of this system is to always produce fish regardless of the impact: farmed fish fattened and stuffed with antibiotics, small fishermen trampled by large farmed fish operators, aquatic fish nursery divers working in dismal conditions, sometimes without minimum safety conditions, etc.

War Baby
Digital Collage
2021

About the Artwork
